PSHE/RSHE
PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education)/ RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education) is recognised as a key subject for our children.
At Silfield Oak Primary Academy, it is felt that PSHE/RSHE needs to be taught and addressed in an ongoing manner. In PSHE/RSHE, frequent, albeit shorter lessons, are felt to be the best way to work with the children in addressing friendships, conflict resolution, self-regulation and wellbeing. Our Oracy strategy is threaded through this.
It is the intent of the curriculum to:
- Develop an understanding of their own and others emotions allowing for them to create and resolve conflicts within friendships and within families.
- Build confidence in their own strengths and appreciate differences in themselves and others.
- Understand their own changes and how best to maintain their personal wellbeing.
- Understand their civic responsibilities in their school, local community, country and wider world.
We use the CUSP PSHE curriculum which reflects the updated RSHE guidance. This is woven through our school curriculum and policies. In addition the CUSP PSHE is enhanced by the addition of geographical and contextual units, these include water safety, rail safety, online safety, building site safety and road safety. We adapt and respond to the local and contextual needs.
Year groups study the same idea at the same time in the school year. Exploring the same central idea at the same time allows school communities to connect learning across year groups and supports schools in shaping assembly sequences, whole school events and ongoing monitoring.
Key concepts have been positioned across the curriculum in multiple places to ensure that pupils have time to embed their understanding and develop their thinking as they mature. Some fundamental concepts will be revisited in all year groups due to their significance to young people living in the modern world.
Parents and carers have the right to access the materials that their child is being taught, please speak to your child’s class teacher for support.
We hold an annual consultation for all of our stakeholders to take part in and have their say in our curriculum and find out how you can support your child at home. We share half termly curriculum letters with parents which highlight the key teaching and vocabulary that the children will learn. Parents/carers are welcome to ask for access to the resources that teachers are using.
Parents and carers are unable to withdraw their child from statutory lessons. Children can be withdrawn from sex education (Year 5 and 6) through consultation with the headteacher.
NSPCC PANTS
Children have at least half termly NSPCC PANTS sessions to help keep them safe. Materials and links are shared with parents/carers regularly. Please support by reinforcing the key messages at home.
Childline
From Year 1 children will have at least half termly sessions about Childline and they will learn the number off by heart. Please see the video link below that is shared with the children.
